5 out of 5 stars Cool!!!   August 10, 2010

This is an awesome microscope; I wish I had it when I was taking anatomy. It doesn't' get any better than this; you can take pictures of your slides and record things moving. I recorded my blood which I thought was pretty cool and my mom's, she has Pernicious Anemia and I could see the difference in our blood samples. I think it is a great school and education aid.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, ok product for looking through observation   August 9, 2010

This one has OK quality for looking through objects or slides. But it has bad quality to observe the surface. The lighting part is not bright enough and can not cover whole area. I'd think this one is much better. ViTiny Pro10 Plus Portable Digital Microscope Camera (Free Shipping in US) from Oasis Scientific.

3 out of 5 stars Price is good but quality reflects price   July 31, 2010

Maybe I expected too much but the optics should be reasonably clear at any price. I was disappointed that the image had a dark spot on the screen that was centered just to the right of the left edge. It was not large but was ever present and on most photos I took. That was disappointing and I returned the microscope to the manufacturer. I did enjoy the image quality of the LCD microscope however.

3 out of 5 stars The black 'smudge'   June 30, 2010

I received my microscope two days ago and it was in the mail back to Amazon that night. Unfortunately, we apparently got one of the scopes with the dark spot or smudge or whatever appearing on the specimen screen. Our dark smudge looked to be some sort of debris lodged internally somewhere. In addition - the microscope we received had been previously unpacked - as in the bag the scope was packed in the box was torn open - the box itself was a bit tattered - there were fingerprints everywhere that could show a fingerprint - and the screen protector film was haphazardly stuck back onto the screen.

Now, this is why I shop with Amazon: I informed them of the problem - printed my return labels - sent back our defective microscope - and am now waiting patiently for our replacement. (For the record, I also contacted Celestron via email - they answered very promptly and suggested I return the microscope to Amazon or directly to Celestron immediately.)

Here's hoping our replacement works out. The concept is fantastic and exactly what we need and the price is excellent. It's a shame to have to go through this effort to get a working product - but hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

1 out of 5 stars Needed some work done on it to make it operational   June 9, 2010

There are a couple of quality problems with this microscope. First, is that there was some dust and a hair on one of the lenses that was inside of the microscope itself. This wasn't something that you could just wipe away. Not wanting to bother with going the replacement steps, I ended up having to clean it myself, and those small few grains of dust and hair appeared large enough on the monitor to seriously affect the view picture of the microscope. This entailed taking apart most of the top portion to get to the CCD. Took about 20-30 minutes to take it apart, clean it, then put it back together. All of this could have been avoided with simply assembling the microscope in a clean room or maybe a little bit of quality control, such as actually testing the thing prior to shipping.
Next, the top of it was loose, and the screw holding it together was completely stripped out. I had to take that out and replace it with a larger screw to get it to hold together tightly so it would function properly.

There was no "dark spot" that other reviewers complained about, so at least celestron seems to have fixed that problem, but the other problems I had with it mean that I have to give it a low score. They never should have happened in the first place.

Once everything was working, it wasn't too bad of a microscope. It is still a bit shakey, so the picture moves around a bit when I try to snap a photo because of the button press. The lighting really needs an upgrade too, as it is just a bit too dim.
